-
Assists performers in selecting and locating pieces dedicated to notable musicians in history. Can also be used to establish the relative importance or popularity of a musician, and to determine influences of the musician on a composer.
-
Includes citations of musical works written by composers in memory of other notable musicians post mortem. Covers classical compositions written from the early 17th century to 2001. Works written to obscure dedicatees are omitted when research in “standard music reference works or literature about the composers” did not yield sufficient identifying information.
-
Listed in alphabetical order by dedicatee’s last name. For example, a user looking for a piece of music dedicated to Mozart would look up Mozart’s name and see a list of works dedicated to him after his death. Each dedicatee entry includes nationality, birth and death dates, and pieces dedicated to him or her listed alphabetically by composer’s last name. Each dedicated piece entry lists the composer, year of composition, title, publisher, and a brief description. Following the main body is a bibliography of writings that discuss some specific types of musical memorials. Indexes: chronological, calendar-year (arranged by month/day of birth and death dates of dedicatees), and composer.
