Reference book for studying the history of music and musicians of England before 1800.

Music and music making in England by both native and foreign musicians up to 1800. Included are works on theory, practical aspects of art as well as music sources and catalogues where they bring the reader to an understanding of the subject. Entries include literature published in 20th century English, French, and German, with one title in Italian, as well as unpublished research work. Only British research is included.

There are two parts to the bibliography. Part I, titled, Music and its Environment, covers literature regarding a specific heading and subheading. Included are the following topics: Literature on Music in general; Instruments and instrumental music; Folk music; Church music; Social conditions; The Middle Ages; The Renaissance; The seventeenth century; The eighteenth century. Part II, titled, Persons, is devoted to individuals and their works and are listed alphabetically by last name. Citations include one or two sentence abstracts. The book also includes both an author index as well as a source index.
