Fradkin, Robert A. The Well-Tempered Announcer: A Pronunciation Guide to Classical Music. Bloomington and Indianapolis: Indiana University Press, 1996.
-
A guide to pronunciation of words in the languages of Europe and East Asia. Emphasizes composers, musical works, musicians, and other words common to announcing musical performance. Intended for announcers, but also useful for musicians, music-lovers, musicologists, music directors, etc.
-
Discusses basic phonetics, conventions in pronunciation of musical terms, and tips to pronunciation. Includes European and East Asian languages.
-
Includes Prelude and Overture that introduce the topic and discuss the rationale behind the pronunciation rules in the book. The book has four movements: 1- Discusses the basics of transcription and phonetics. 2- Alphabetical list of terms, names, ensembles, places, and musical works. Gives phonetic transcription of each. 3- Lists the same terms, but classifies them by language. 4- Discusses specific pronunciation rules for each of the languages (divided into six categories: Romance, Germanic, Slavic and Baltic, Finno-Ugric, Other European, and East Asian). The book also included five interludes (which discuss phonetics in greater detail), a coda (a summary of each language's diacritics and letter-sounds), and a finale (an annotated bibliography). Includes an index of phonetic terms, languages, and symbols.
-
Useful information, good for answering I've always wondered...-type questions about pronunciation.
-
Organization is a bit fragmented, with the interludes (phonetics) found in the midst of discussion about individual languages.
