For the individual interested in the LP recordings of operettas and musicals made since 1940.
-
Reviews 100 of the very best LP recordings from the bulk of the many recordings of British, American, French, German, Austrian and Hungarian operettas and musicals made over more than forty years since the introduction of the long-playing (LP) record (c. 1950 1990). For French, Austrian, German and Hungarian operettas of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the author only considered shows which appeared on a record under its own title. Individual numbers recorded on a concert or recital album were not considered. For shows written since 1950, the author was more selective, limiting himself to what was in his opinion the most important and most interesting. Rather than dig deeply into the unsuccessful work by a composer or writer with many successes to his or her name, the author chose to look at equally unsuccessful pieces by authors who are not so heavily represented.

First are an introduction by Gerald Bordman and the author's preface. The book is divided into ten chapters. The first half of the book discusses pre-LP musicals and operettas. The second half of the book covers musicals from 1950 to the 1980s. Chapter titles are as follows: 1) From Opera-bouffe to Operette, 2) Victorian and Edwardian Musical Comedy in Britain, 3) Vienna's Golden Age, 4) LPs of America's Pre-LP Days 5) Britain Between the Great War and the LP, 6) The Continental Musical from Supremacy to Oblivion, 7) Bonanza on Broadway: the first part 8) Bonanza on Broadway: the second part 9) Thirty Years of British Musicals, 1950-1980, 10) The 1980s. Each chapter ends with the author's list of 10 essential records and other recommended records from that time period. A general index concludes the book.
