Only harpsichord, clavichord, and piano music are included. The author attempts to only include composers who have written substantial music that has been influential for others or music that is very attractive. Other minor composers have been mentioned but not in great detail.

Divided into four main sections that proceed chronologically: First - deals with early keyboards and music. Second - 1550 through Bach and Handel. Third - Classical period through Beethoven. Fourth - Romantic through Contemporary music. Each of these main sections is divided into several other chapters grouped by genre, composers, or other similarities in the music.
