Gillespie, John and Anna. Piano Performance Video Recordings on VHS: A Selected Catalog. Lanham, Maryland and Oxford: the Scarecrow Press, Inc., 2003.
-
A catalog of piano performances on video. For students and teachers. Useful for observing and teaching performance techniques.
-
It is not, nor, never could be a definitive catalog. Contains about 200 piano and harpsichord performances on video, either solo or with orchestra. Some videos have performances in their entirety; others have only fragments. Most videos included were produced in the United States, but some are included from Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Russia, and Japan. Some videos are not strictly piano performance, but are included because they are musically interesting or have historical value. The authors only included recordings they could obtain and view. Includes videos produced from the 1980's until the date of publication, though some footage comes from the 1960's.
-
Information is presented in three sections. The first provides information about each video reviewed for this guide. This section is organized alphabetically by performing pianist. The titles are then listed of each video recording on which the pianist is featured. A video title and its information comprise a single entry. For each entry, a detailed annotation and list of pieces performed are provided. The second section lists supplemental video recordings containing performances by more than one pianist, as in collections, competitions, documentaries, etc. The third section cross-references the first two sections of the catalog by composer.
-
Annotations are detailed and helpful. Although the catalogue is not complete, there is enough information for the student or enthusiast to get started.
-
The third section that cross-references gives category names in which specific compositions can be found, but not page numbers.
