To increase awareness and appreciation for the life and works of William Mason, and to serve as an aid to further research.
-
The literature cited on William Mason includes “histories of music, dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographies, newspaper and periodical articles, doctoral dissertations, general books on music and musicians, and some master's theses.” Advertisements and trivial references have been omitted unless they offered some little-known facts. There exists a large amount of literature on Mason as a piano pedagogue, much of it written by his colleague, William Matthews. Garber limits these writings to the most significant. He is also selective with the reviews of Mason's performances.
-
The book begins with a preface, a chronology of Mason's life and a list of abbreviations. As a whole, the work is divided into four main sections: literature on William Mason, Mason's literary writings, selected programs, and a catalogue of compositions and editions. There are 1,018 citations numbered consecutively throughout the book. Each bibliographic entry has a detailed annotation. In the section on selected programs, the reviews and announcements are listed in chronological order. These include the venue, the newspaper, if applicable, the type of concert, the music performed, and a quotation of part of the review. The catalog of compositions and editions is divided into three sections: published works, unpublished manuscripts, and works of other composers which Mason edited. An incipit is included with most entries. A separate section of vocal works lists secular and sacred songs and Mason's hymn tune harmonizations.
