The mission of MusicHound R&B is to present the breadth and depth (of R&B) in order to convince you to do one thing- go out and get the music. A discography for the collector or enthusiast of rhythm and blues; guides the user to available and recommended recordings. Also serves as a biographical dictionary, providing history and influences for every artist or group included.
-
Focuses on individual and group acts in the genre of Rhythm and Blues. R&B in this guide has been given a rather broad definition to include the genres of gospel, jazz, pre-rock pop, rock n' roll, hip-hop, rap, and others. Coverage starts with earlier influential artists such as Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, and James Brown, and ranges to the date of publication. No further criteria are specified. Discographies include both CDs and LPs.
-
The main section of this work is the album guide, followed by a substantial section of helpful indexes and appendices. The album guide includes both individual artists and groups, and organizes them together alphabetically by artist's last name or group name. Within each entry, an informative paragraph is given with biographical information, a description of the artist's or group's style, and their standing/influence in the world of R&B. The sections that follow this paragraph list album information, giving suggestions on what to buy and what to avoid. Each album is rated. A section of appendices follows the guide, and these direct the user to compilations, publications, web sites, record labels, radio stations, festivals, and workshops that are related to R&B. Four indexes can be found at the end. The band member index lists members and what group they perform in. A producer index links each producer to every album they produced in the guide. The roots index lists artists and names what groups they have influenced. The last index lists groups according to categories invented by the authors, which are more silly than helpful.
-
Well organized, entertaining, and easy to use. The appendices and indexes in the back make this resource much more than an album guide; it equips the user with everything they would need to learn more in the genre of R&B.
-
An index for sub-genres would be helpful (i.e for those who like blues but not hip-hop), but it does not exist. The guide is a little outdated for the fast-paced music industry. Groups and individuals have produced multiple albums since its publication, and new groups and artists have emerged.
