Divided into sixteen chapters. Begins with a brief biography of Bach that is broken down by where he lived throughout his life. The biography also gives basic biographical information on his two wives and his children. Chapter two contains the performance analyses of Bach's works from BWV 1 to BWV 249. For each work the author provides the following information: Duration, Occasion, Text, Performing Forces, First Performance, Editions, Manuscript Sources, Notes, Performance Issues, Discography, and Selected Bibliography. The remainder of the book consists of the following indexes and additional historical information: Index of Text Sources, Table of Copyists, Glossary of Instruments, Index of Works by Duration, Index of Works by Type, Index of Works by Soloists, Index of Works by Chorale Voices, Index of Works by Instruments, Index of Chorale Tunes, A Chronology of First Performances, Liturgical Index of Works, Occasions of Other Works, and Index of Works by Title.
