Gribenski, Jean. Thèses de doctorat en langue française relatives a la musique: bibliographie commentée = French Language Dissertations in Music: An Annotated Bibliography. New York: Pendragon Press, 1979.
-
A resource for finding dissertations of a wide variety of musical topics written in French.
-
Includes only university doctoral dissertations, written in French and defended in a Belgian, Canadian, French, or Swiss university. The 438 dissertations included were written between 1883 and 1976. Dissertations must include music, but the exact subject matter varies greatly and frequently was not written for an actual musicology degree.
-
The dissertations are organized based on the RILM categories, with slight modifications. Categories include history of music (including periods from antiquity to twentieth century), ethnomusicology, instruments, notation and editing, theory and analysis, pedagogy, and music in relation to other disciplines. Within each category, dissertations are listed chronologically by year, then alphabetically by author within each year. Each entry generally includes a designated number for reference, title, author, English translation of the title, definition of the doctorate (type, year, discipline, university), bibliographical references, and an annotation in most cases.
