Havlice, Patricia Pate. Popular Repertory Guide--Vocal. Metuchen, New Jersey: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1975.
-
The purpose of this volume is to provide a tool for finding words and music to folk songs, pop tunes, spirituals, hymns, children's songs, sea chanteys and blues.
-
The author indexed three hundred and one song books published between 1940 and 1972, most of which were published in the United States. From those books, she indexed only those songs for which both music and words were provided. Songbooks searched range from Theatrical Chansons of the Fifteenth and Early Sixteenth Centuries to The Treasury of Negro Spirituals, from Merrily We Sing: 105 Polish Folksongs to The Bob Dylan Song Book. No specific criteria were given as to the selection of these books other than that the songs fit into the categories listed under Use.
-
After a short Preface, the book is divided into three main sections: First is the Bibliography, which lists all 301 indexed songbooks alphabetically by author or compiler, and consecutively numbered. Second is the Index of Titles and First Lines which is arranged alphabetically by the titles of songs, as well as by the first line of the song and the first line of the chorus. Following the title or first line, this index gives the composer's name (unless unknown), and the number that identifies the songbook in the bibliography where that particular song is located. If the song is found in multiple songbooks, all book numbers are given. The third section is the Index of Composers and Lyricists, which is arranged alphabetically. Under each name the songs credited to that individual appear in alphabetical order, so that they can then be searched for in the Index of Titles and First Lines.
