Hinson, Maurice. Music for Piano and Orchestra: An Annotated Guide. 2nd ed. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1993.
-
A repertory guide that presents music written for piano and orchestra. Aids pianists and other musicians (such as orchestra conductors) in identifying and choosing new repertoire for themselves and their students.
-
Limits selections to pieces written for at least eight instruments. Covers mostly music written after 1700, with some exceptions. Includes music by the standard composers familiar to most musicians, and also considers for inclusion as many contemporary pieces as possible. Transcriptions are only included for a few of the most standard, established pieces. Pieces may be listed even if they are out of print. Many cadenzas are included, especially for Beethoven and Mozart. The author has a clear preference for only including cadenzas that are written in an accurate historical style. Almost all of the bibliographic sources recommended by the composer are printed in the English language.
-
Begins with a thorough explanation of the selection process, a guide to use, a list of abbreviations, and a directory of publishers. This short directory lists publishers alphabetically and provides a city, a full address or a number which refers the reader to a table of parent publishing companies and their addresses. Alphabetical by composer name. Under each composer, works are listed chronologically or in some cases by opus number. Entries provide key, date of composition or opus number, editor, publisher, publisher’s number, and copyright date, length of piece, description of the piece, its style characteristics, the form, interpretative suggestions, recommended reading, difficulty rating, and unusual techniques or challenges involved. In cases with more than one edition, the author’s preferred version is listed first. After the main section, the author includes a supplemental section of newly discovered works and previously listed works that have newly published editions. This supplement is organized similarly to the main section. An annotated bibliography and set of indexes follows. The index is divided into several sections based on a particular instrumentation or difficulty level (for example: Two Pianos and Orchestra, Piano and Band, Prepared Piano and Orchestra, and Intermediate to Moderately Difficult Works). Each section of the index contains simply an alphabetical list of those composers with at least one work that meets the given criterion.

There is no indication of which editions are out of print.
