Keeling, Richard. North American Indian Music: A Guide to Published Sources and Selected Recordings. Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, ed. James Porter, vol. 1440. Garland Library of Music Ethnology, vol 5. New York and London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1997.
-
This was the first attempt at a comprehensive bibliography of Native American music.
-
The types of resources that can be found in this work are books, articles, some commercial recordings, reviews in journals or periodicals and some dissertations and theses. The subject covers any North American Indian group, excluding most Mexican Indian music because its culture is less connected with those of the north. There are several languages represented, although the author preferred to reference English translations of works rather than the original foreign language works. The citations include dates and locations of fieldwork and there are annotations for each reference. The research represented in the references covers a large time frame, from 1535 to 1995.
-
The introduction to this work discusses the history of North American Indian music research from before 1880 to the present, from the perspectives of history, musicology and anthropology. The bibliography is organized into ten sections, divided by culture area. These include a general or inter-regional section, the arctic and sub-arctic, Northwest coast, California, Great Basin and Plateau, Southwest, Plains, Northeast and Great Lakes, Southeast and Mexico. The 1,497 sources are organized within those regional categories alphabetically by author and then by year of publication.
-
Lists many references for several different regional areas and tribes.
