Lahee, Henry Charles. Annals of Music in America: A Chronological Record of Significant Musical Events, from 1640 to the Present Day, with Coments on the Various Periods into which the Work is Divided. Boston, 1922. Reprint, New York, AMS Press: 1969.
-
A chronicle of important musical events and people in America from 1640 to 1921.
-
Covers a variety of aspects of American music, including musical organizations, performers, composers, and premieres (of compositions both native and foreign). Limited to art music.
-
The history of American music is organized into eight time-periods. Each includes a brief history and description, then a chronology of significant events. Also includes an index of compositions performed in America (listed alphabetically by author, then chronologically by American premiere). The final section, entitled Miscellaneous Items, includes lists of ballad operas, significant concerts, conductors, conservatories of music, performers' debuts, festivals, historical instruments, etc.
-
Many sections are selected lists (such as Instruments in the Miscellaneous Items section, which gives only 22 instruments), but these sections state no criteria for inclusion.
