Oliver, Nic, ed. The Billboard Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock, 2d ed. New York: Billboard Books, 2003.
-
An illustrated encyclopedia providing discography and references for the casual music researcher or enthusiast.
-
Covers mainstream pop artists from the twentieth century. Places more emphasis on most recently popular music. Does cover the more popular jazz, blues, R&B, hip hop, and country artists but only when artists seemed to impact the broader popular music scene.
-
Organized alphabetically by group name. Individual artists are listed by surname unless their name is also used as a band name (e.g. Dave Matthews Band). Many artists within a band also have their own entry. Photos are provided for many artists. Includes a discography with ratings. Lists artists, producers, prominent session players with whom the artist(s) has worked with. Lists influences including poets and authors. Gives further projects with which the artist(s) has been involved: movies, videos, books etc.
-
Brief encyclopedia-like entries. A good thorough coverage of modern popular artists.
-
Tends to give insufficient coverage to earlier artists even artists that have created huge changes in popular modern music (e.g. Patsy Cline is covered in one paragraph).
