Laster, James. A Discography of Treble Voice Recordings. Metuchen, New Jersey and London: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1985.
-
To aid singers and music teachers in locating recordings of choral works performed by treble voices.
-
This discography provides entries for recordings of treble voices, which includes choirs of un-changed male voices, choirs of girls’ voices, and choirs of women’s voices. Mixed-voice ensembles with selections performed by the women of the choir are included, when known. Similarly, some cathedral choirs have sections in a recording when the un-changed male voices are featured alone; these are also included, when known. Recordings listed were found in the Schwann Record Catalogues, the Union Catalogue of the Library of Congress, and about five other major music libraries. A separate section in the discography lists private recordings. This section is comprised of recordings made by colleges and high schools. To create this list, questionnaires were sent to directors of women’s choral ensembles who appeared on the list of Sharon Breden, former Chairperson of the National Committee on Women’s Choruses of the American Choral Directors Association. Private recordings that have not been made into discs or cassettes are not included.
-
This discography begins with a preface, which is followed by the discography itself. The discography is 144 pages long. Entries are listed alphabetically by the composer’s last name. Entries include the following: 1) the composer and/or arranger and dates, when available, 2) the title of the work (separate titles are given for individual movements), 3) the name of the performing ensemble, 4) the name of the conductor, and 5) the name of the recording (if given), the recording company, and number. If available, a date of issue is given in parenthesis. A three page list of private recordings then follows. Entries in this section list the organization name, sometimes a contact within the organization, and an address for obtaining recordings. The discography concludes with a bibliography.
-
The list of private recordings doesn’t include titles of recordings or titles of works. Also, the discography is outdated, as it was published in 1985.
