Lesure, François, compiler. Catalogue de la musique imprimée avant 1800 conservée dans les bibliothèques publiques de Paris. Paris: Bibliothèque Nationale, 1981.
-
This catalogue helps the researcher locate music printed before 1800 in the libraries of Paris. The catalogue covers fourteen libraries in Paris, each with their own archives that cannot be browsed. Hence, this resource will help the researcher find exactly where what he or she needs.
-
This catalogue describes the musical collections printed before 1800 of the Bibliothèque Nationale and the other libraries of Paris. This catalogue includes works by composers as well as anonymous works, but not collected anthologies or theoretical works about music. Most of the collections come from the collection given to the Bibliothèque Nationale by the Département de la Musique in 1942, and from the old collections of the Bibliothèque du Conservatoire given to the national library in 1964. Lesure claims that there are many collections and even composers that do not appear in RISM series A, pt. 1, because his research was much more extensive.
-
The scores catalogued are listed alphabetically, first by composer, then by title. The information given about the collections themselves include the title, the publication information (publisher, place of publication, date, pages), and most importantly, the location of each score. Lesure also includes published references to the collection in French musical journals and RISM. Anonymous collections are listed alphabetically by title after the Z composers.
-
If you want to know what published music printed before 1800 can be found in the libraries of Paris, this is the resource to use. It is very extensive, and could save many hours in the process of finding the exact collection(s) the researcher needs.
