A descriptive biography and historical study on the life, career, and published output of Venetian music printer Antonio Gardano.

Provides a biography and history of Gardano's life and achievements as well as commentary on the repertory of his publications and technical aspects of his works. A catalogue of Gardano's complete published output is also included in the text. Commentary includes essays on the printing revolution, career biography of Gardano and his printing company.

Volume one: First major section includes essays on music and the printing revolution and acareer biography on Gardano. This section also discusses format, paper, typography, and production methods used in the printing industry at the time. The second section provides an overview of Gardano's published repertory, listing and describing unconfirmed and doubtful editions while also listing collected anthologies from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The third section operates as a bibliographic list of Gardano's publications from 1538-1549, prefaced by an explanation on how to interpret the format of the entries. The fourth section is comprised of several appendixes: documents, primary sources cited, secondary works consulted, a short title index to his publications by bibliography and RISM number, composer index, text incipit index, genre index, library index, general index to the chapters, and black-and-white photos of plates. The first section of the second volume is a series of twelve introductory chapters on the history of Gardano's publications from 1550-59. The second section dates undated editions, organizes the contents within editions, lists and describes unconfirmed and doubtful editions, and provides general descriptions of binder's copies mentioned in the catalogue. The third section is a bibliographic list of Gardano's publications from 1530-59. The fourth section is comprised of appendixes similar in format and purpose of those found in the first volume.
