As the third volume in the author’s series of commercially available show music albums, this installment seeks to provide a comprehensive guide of television musicals and studio cast recordings to researchers or aficionados.
-
The author claims to have included “all” commercially recorded television musicals, but presumably only those within the United States or United Kingdom. The only studio cast recordings of stage or film musicals that have been included are those sung in English and performed in New York City. Every recording deemed significant by the author has been included, but those with uncredited vocals or obscure vocalists singing well-represented scores have been excluded. Types of included recordings are as follows: archival recreations; concert recordings; demo recordings; failed musicals; film scores; ice revues; musicals for records; night club revues; original concept albums; pre-Broadway recordings; puppet shows; radio productions; studio casts; television musicals; television productions; television specials. Specifically covers titles written between the years 1874 to 1988 and contains 657 entries with 6,500 song titles. In the case of foreign recordings, only the American-issued label information is given.
-
The volume is organized into an introduction, four sections, and two indexes. The introduction most importantly describes the various types of recordings found in the work. The first section is the discography. Each entry is listed alphabetically by the title. If multiple recordings exist under the same title, entries are then listed chronologically by first performance. Each entry provides the title, date, type of recording, original record label, number of reissues and additional information regarding them, format of available recordings, composer lyricist, musical conductor, and the singing cast members (listed alphabetically). The songs in each album are then listed in the order they were performed on the recording, followed by the performing artist. Entries are occasionally annotated by the author. The second section is a television chronology that provides the name of the network that aired the musical, organized chronologically by airing date. The third section is a studio cast chronology, chronologically listed by first production date. The final section is a film chronology, chronologically listing titles (and the studios which presented them) by date of performance. The work concludes with two indexes: the first, a performer index alphabetically listed by name, each entry followed by an alphabetical list of the albums they starred in; the second, a technical index alphabetically integrating composers, lyricists, and musical directors, with each entry alphabetically listing the relevant album titles.
-
Lacks a song title index, which would be useful for individuals only interested in or aware of a particular song. The source is only current until 1988 and is now badly outdated.
