Maxwell, Grant. Music for Three or More Pianists: A Historical Survey and Catalogue. Metuchen, New Jersey and London: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1993.
-
A historical survey and catalogue for performers and pedagogues of the piano who are seeking music for three or more players.
-
Piano/keyboard music from Bach through the twentieth century requiring three or more performers, including original compositions, and arrangements/transcriptions, both published and unpublished literature.
-
The book is divided into two parts: a historical survey and a catalogue of compositions. In the historical survey, Maxwell chronologically discusses the significant works that aided in the development of this performance medium. The catalogue portion is divided into chapters beginning with the nineteenth-century works followed by the twentieth-century works. After these two broad topics works are presented by medium: Works for Orchestra/Orchestral Reductions, Works with other Instrumentalists/Singers, Works with Variable Instruments, Works with other Acoustic and Electronic Instruments/Tape-Miscellanea, Salon Works, Transcriptions/Arrangements, Pedagogical/Graded Pieces for Class Piano, and Some Anthologies and Collections. A bibliography and two indexes are included, one index by composer, and the other by how many pianos/hands are required. Each citation lists the composer, significant dates, nationality, transcribers/arrangers and their applicable dates, title of the composition, number of pianos/pianists required, original instrumentation/scoring, movements by title, publisher or manuscript information, publication and/or composition dates(s), duration and/or number of pages, location(s) of scores (universities or libraries), principal sources of information.
-
Citations provide very useful information to locate scores/music. Multiple indexes are useful when trying to find a piece for a set number of pianos/pianists.
-
Works listed in the pedagogical section are not found in the other sections.
