Denizeau, Gérard. Les genres musicaux: vers une nouvelle histoire de la musique. Paris: Larousse, 2005.
-
Intended to supply information on the evolution of genres throughout the ages and the contributions these changes have made on the history of music.
-
Includes genres beginning with the Middle ages and continuing through the twentieth century.
-
Organized in chronological order by centuries, with each century being divided into smaller sections according to musical style, genre, or origin. For each genre listed within the century, information is given regarding four topics. First is historical elements, which expounds on the evolution of the genre in a broader sense. Next is musical characters, which presents information on the language parameters in a formal scheme. Composers and works simply lists several prime examples of the time period. Lastly there is a 'music example' which features an analysis of a specific work to allow for better understanding of the genre. There is a helpful table of contents before the chapters start, highlighting the most important features of each time period; following this there is an alphabetical list of the genres. The appendices consist of a timeline, a glossary, an index of names, a select bibliography, and photography credits.
