Mordden, Ethan. A Guide to Orchestral Music: the Handbook for Non-musicians. New York, Oxford: Oxford University Press: 1980.
-
To provide general information on the orchestra and its major works for non-musicians.
-
Includes an introduction to symphony music, followed by essays on all of the major and most well-known works for symphony. There is some bias towards American music, much of which is also included.
-
The book is organized into two main parts. The first is an introduction about all aspects of the symphony and how to listen to its music. The second part consists of many short essays on major orchestral works, which are intended to be used as a study for the non-musician. The works in this second part are arranged chronologically, so that certain periods and styles of music are grouped together.
