Papolos, Janice. The Performing Artist's Handbook. Cincinnati, Ohio: Writer's Digest Books, 1984.
-
A guide to the business of being a professional performing artist. Specifically directed towards those who are just entering the field - college students, in most cases.
-
Covers multiple aspects of establishing a career in the performing arts. The author focuses firstly on establishing a professional appearance, through a résumé, professional photographs, stationery, and joining unions. The second focus of the author then shifts to finding a job, explaining how to make demo recordings, decide on management, publicity, planning a recital, dealing with taxes, and networking. The book is full of other useful information, all of which relates directly to gaining professional experience in a career in the performing arts.
-
The book is organized into two main sections: Getting Started and On Your Way. Throughout twelve chapters, specific steps in learning the ways of the performing arts industry are discussed and dealt with. Appendices, a list of services for artists, a resource bibliography, and an index are found at the end of the guide.
