Pedigo, Alan. International Encyclopedia of Violin-Keyboard Sonatas and Composer Biographies, 2d ed., revised and enlarged. Booneville, Arkansas: Arriaga Publications, 1995.
-
An encyclopedia of musical elements relating to sonata-form works composed for violin and keyboard duo. Intended for the performer interested in violin-piano collaboration.
-
The author has attempted to be exhaustive in his inclusion of information relating to sonatas composed for and performed by violin and keyboard instruments. Keyboard instruments covered include piano, harpsichord, and organ. Harp-Violin duos are also discussed. Also includes information on performers of these sonatas.
-
The encyclopedia is organized in five parts. The first part is a general text, and discusses topics such as the evolution and form of the sonata, modality and tonality, ornaments, recital programs, sonatas of W.A. Mozart, performers and duos, competitions, and musicology. The second part is a list of music schools and composers organized alphabetically by nationality. The third part contains brief biographies of composers. The fourth part consists of five appendices: 1) Music publishers, 2) Phonograph records and recording companies, 3) Tempo, loudness and nuances, 4) Clefs, and 5) diatonic scales. The fifth part contains bibliographies for additional reading on the topics covered in the encyclopedia.
-
Includes an extensive number of biographical entries, including several entries not available in larger standard music reference sources. Entries in all of the sections are concise and clearly worded.
-
The layout of information on the page sometimes appears cluttered or crowded, making the work seem more intimidating and harder to use than it really is.
