Poultney, David. Dictionary of Western Church Music. Chicago and London: American Library Association, 1991.
-
Intended primarily for the professional and nonprofessional worship service musician. It aims to provide concise information about different liturgical services and music.
-
Limited to the following Christian religions: Roman Catholic, Anglican, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist and Baptist. The author includes sacred music information throughout the history of Western music although there is a particular focus on sacred music and worship practices of the 20th century.
-
Organized alphabetically integrating both composer and subject. There are roughly 400 entries. Each entry varies in length and detail. Entries of composers include birth and death dates along with biographical information and reference to major works. After the main body of this source, there is a reference section listing American publishers of church music, major societies and organizations associated with church music, major sacred music periodicals and citations of musical examples discussed in the book.
-
The information is easy to access, concise and clear. The author has been careful to include subjects that would especially affect the modern church musician.
