Vocal teachers or students could use this book to gain knowledge of older recordings that have been released in the past on record. This information could be useful in order to study performance practices in singing art songs included, or to study vocal technique of particular artists.

The book covers some widely sung and well-known songs and arias in English, French, Italian, and German. Works from approximately 31 composers are covered. The book professes to be current up through 1971. This is not meant to be comprehensive, however, and provides only recordings which are more easily obtained.

The Preface is preceded by a Table of Contents and followed by an explanatory page about record labels and their abbreviations used in the book. The book is divided into three sections. The first section is ordered alphabetically by composer's last name. Each entry underneath a composer's name is ordered alphabetically by song title. Beneath the song titles is printed the artists name, last name first, the name of the album, and the record label and serial number. Each record is numbered. The second section indexes recordings containing songs all from one composer. This section is organized alphabetically by composer last name. Beneath the composer's name, the recordings are ordered by serial number, and the titles of each song are listed in paragraph format followed by the names of the artists on the recording. The third section indexes recordings with collections of songs by more than one composer. It is organized alphabetically by record label, and then by serial number. Beneath the serial numbers, the composers' last names are arranged alphabetically, followed by song titles in paragraph form. This information is followed by the names of the artists on the record. There is an index of titles and first lines of songs, arranged alphabetically. All three main sections number each citation, beginning with the first citation in section one and ending with the last citation in section three. The index of titles and first lines contains these assigned numbers for location.

Many very prominent songs which are part of the standard solo vocal repertoire are included in this discography. There is no distinction, however, between an art song and an opera aria. A reader would not have any idea this discography included opera arias except by chance location of a familiar aria. The fact that opera arias are included calls for an appendix organized by title of opera, with its constituent arias listed. An appendix which split up one language from another would also be helpful. Another problem with language distinctions is the missing information of what language a song was originally written in. This problem should be solved by including the original language and language recorded for each song. Another piece of information that would be useful is some indication of how or from where this discography was compiled. Either a bibliography of some type or an explanation in the Preface would suffice.
