Schnapper, Edith B., ed. The British Union-Catalogue of Early Music Printed before the Year 1801: A Record of the Holdings of Over One Hundred Libraries throughout the British Isles. 2 vols. London: Butterworths Scientific Publications, 1957.
-
A composer catalogue with some bibliographic information useful for scholars seeking the location of editions of European music printed prior to 1801 preserved in libraries throughout the British Isles. Also provides insight into how much valuable music remains neglected and uncatalogued.
-
Includes entries for musical works, music printed or issued as a supplement to books and periodicals, settings of liturgies when the composer or editor is known, and settings of psalters and hymnals. This music is not limited to British music or British editions, however each entry describes a source that is permanent to the library where it is preserved.
-
This is primarily a composer catalogue arranged alphabetically, but it does integrate a limited amount of subject headings. The titles under each composer are alphabetical, unless otherwise specified. Composers with substantial amounts of works included have their compositions arranged in sections such as collected works, concertos, sonatas, selections, and doubtful works. The main entries include cross-references to works edited or arranged by the composer and to collections containing his music. The entries include as much bibliographic information as was available. It does specify if the information was supplied from outside the work, on the title page, or from elsewhere in the work. The location of the source is also given including the address of the given library.
-
This is a location list that identifies a great mass of little-known music.
-
Lacks information on sheet songs of the 18th century published after 1730.
