-
To credit specific albums that impacted American culture and define the threads that have revolutionized popular music. Assists readers in understanding the evolution of popular music and culture.
-
Limited to post-1948 12” LP albums and the later CD equivalent. No compilations or “best of” albums are included, as the songs on those albums had already made their impact. Smith clarifies that “these albums were selected for the impact they made on American music specifically and American culture in general, either directly, or indirectly.” This is not a “most popular” list, it is a “most influential” list. Album selection based on opinions of critics, the author, and his sources.
-
Chronological by album release. Provides album title, artist, recording dates, release dates, and producer. Each entry includes an essay describing the album and its influences upon American culture. Appendixes include: Ten Albums That Almost Made It, Ten Important Producers, Albums Listed Chronologically, and Albums Listed Alphabetically. Indexed by artist, album title, and song title. Bibliography included.
