Parkinson, John Alfred, ed. Victorian Music Publishers: An Annotated List. Detroit Studies in Music Bibliography, ed. J. Bunker Clark, no. 64. Warren, Michigan: Harmonie Park Press, 1990.
-
Provides the names, locations, operating dates, and brief information about English Music Publishers of the nineteenth century. Useful to music librarians as a bibliographical tool. Also could be used as a source of interest and information for collectors of Victorian music and Victorian musical instruments.
-
Almost all British music publishers from 1830 to 1900, with a few important exceptions outside those dates. The publishers listed are located in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, and surrounding islands.
-
Begins with a list of illustrations shown throughout the book, a short preface, and a list of abbreviations used in the annotated list of publishers, which immediately follows. After the list is a geographical index of publishing firms outside of London. The annotated list of publishers is arranged alphabetically by the name of the firm. In the entries, under the name of each firm is listed the address, dates of operation, and sometimes a brief description of the company's history and a citation of a representative example of the publisher's work. The geographical index of firms outside London is organized alphabetically according to location (ex: Channel Isles, England, Wales). Under each location, the firms are then listed alphabetically by city and then by name. Some illustrations are printed throughout the book that show title pages from some of the publishers' works.
-
Very easy to use and find names of publishers because of its clear organization. The only existing exhastive directory of nineteenth-century British music publishers.
-
Many Welsh publishers are omitted, as well as some composers who published solely their own works.
