Steele, Robert. The Earliest English Music Printing: A Description and Bibliography of English Printed Music to the Close of the Sixteenth Century. London: Chiswick Press, 1903.
-
An enumerative bibliography of late 16th century examples of English printed music. For those with knowledge of bibliographic scholarship terminology.
-
Coverage is English music printing and printed music circa the late 16th century, however the books covered range from 1495 to 1600. Languages of books include English and Latin and are from both private and public collections. Also includes examples that have been known to exist but may no longer survive. The majority of books included are service books and psalms. A brief history of printing methods and output or editions specific to certain publishers has been included.
-
The book is divided into sections as follows: a list of illustrations, a short bibliography of music printing, two chapters, an appendix, the bibliography, a synopsis of known and doubtful editions, the illustrations, an index, and Appenda and Corrigenda. The list of illustrations consists of 43 numbered entries and gives the title and approximate year of printing. The short bibliography provides full information and is ordered chronologically by year of publication, beginning with 1765 and ending with 1899. The first chapter discusses methods of early music printing and the second chapter discusses the printers of English music books. The appendix transcribes patents, privileges, and official documents from printing publishers. Each entry in the bibliography is numbered and ordered chronologically by year of publication. It gives collations/signature marks, title of book, publication date, folio size, publisher, title page information, type setting, and location. The synopsis of known and doubtful editions is in table format, giving name, date, folio size, printer, library, type, and remarks. The Appenda and Corrigenda highlights typological errors or updates locations of certain books.
-
Symbols and codes within the bibliographic entries are not explained anywhere in the book, which necessitates previous understanding of bibliographic scholarship.
