Stewart-Green, Miriam. Women Composers: A Checklist of Works for the Solo Voice. A Reference Publication in Women's Studies, ed. Barbara Haber. Boston, Massachusetts: G.K. Hall and Company, 1980.
-
Serves a very focused purpose: to list music for solo voice by women composers.
-
Concerned only with classical literature (jazz music and folk songs are excluded). Lists 3,746 women from 72 countries, dating from 600 B.C. References to existing manuscripts date from circa 1151 A.D. to the date of publication. Does not evaluate songs.
-
The work begins with a preface and a list of abbreviations with regard to nationalities, instruments, publishers, and libraries. The main body then follows, which is divided into three general lists. General List 1 alphabetically lists composers and provides song titles; General List 2 alphabetically provides song composers but lists no titles; and General List 3 alphabetically lists composers believed to have composed songs. Entries in all lists contain names (married and family), pseydonyms, prizes awarded, and any firsts such as first woman to compose an opera. The work continues with five additional sections: Operas; Cantatas, Oratorios, Masses; Cycles and Collections; With Instruments; Dramatic Scenes. Entries in these additional sections are listed alphabetically by composer's name. The work concludes with a bibliography and a name index.
