McLean, Mervyn. An Annotated Bibliography of Oceanic Music and Dance. 2d ed. Detroit Studies in Music Bibliography, ed. J. Bunker and Marilyn S. Clark, no. 74. Warren, Michigan: Harmonie Park Press, 1995.
-
This annotated bibliography is useful to the more experienced researcher because it requires that the person already be familiar with oceanic tribes or areas.
-
The source covers oceanic music up to 1992. The Oceania region includes all the islands of the Pacific, New Guinea and the Torres Strait. The areas not included are Australia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. This source refers to books, journal articles, reviews, LP recordings issued with brochures or sleeve notes, manuscripts on file in public institutions, theses in common European languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish). Travel books and missionary journals are only used if they are in English. The items that are excluded are sources in lesser known languages, dictionaries, song texts with translation only, songs with piano accompaniment, publications of acculturated songs or hymns, newspaper articles (unless they are particularly significant), and popular press articles. The sources that are included are not screened for quality nor does the author endorse them.
-
This source is organized alphabetically by author's (author of the source, not composer or artist) last name. Within each entry, the author includes an annotation, an area code, page numbers, and subjects. Manuscripts and published materials are integrated. The citations are very thorough and precise. There is an area code index organized by region. Each region is organized by tribe or area. In each area, an author and page number are listed to refer back to the main alphabetical index.
-
Very thorough examination of the sources. The limitations set for the reference has made it very specific and unique.
