Suskin, Steven. Show Tunes: The Songs, Shows, and Careers of Broadway’s Major Composers. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2010.
-
Provides performers and music directors with information on many songs, both well known and obscure, by major Broadway composers. Also gives those interested in Broadway history with biographical information on composers and historical context of their shows.
-
Covers the surviving output of forty major Broadway composers, plus several notable shows by other composers.
-
Major composers are divided into 3 major historical periods. For each composer, Suskin provides birth and death dates and places, several pages of biographical information, and a list of shows with premier date and theatre, run length, collaborators, revival information, and published songs from each. Historical period sections are followed by a section of notable scores by other composers, with show title, premier date and theatre, run length, contributors, revival information, and published songs from each. Three appendixes: Chronological Listing of Productions, Collaborator Reference Listing, and Bibliography. Indexed by song title, show title, and people.
