Swanekamp, Joan, comp. English Ayres: A Selectively Annotated Bibliography and Discography. Westport, Connecticut: Greenwood, 1984.
-
A bibliography of writings, music, and recordings of English Ayres. A companion to the bibliography in Warlock's The English Ayre. Not comprehensive, should be used in conjunction with other resources for a complete picture of the research on English Ayres.
-
Covers 27 composers, including those originally covered in Warlock's book as well as eight additional composers from E.H. Fellowes' English School of Lutenist Song Writers and English Lute Songs. Includes literature, music, and recordings. Does not include reviews.
-
After a chapter that lists general literature about Ayres, there are 27 chapters, each devoted to a specific composer. Each chapter subdivided by literature, music, and recordings. Literary works are arranged alphabetically by author. Music is arranged chronologically by date of first publication. There are two indexes: the Author Index, which includes all the material by one author; and the Title index, which contains the composer, date of first edition, and page number.
-
No annotations. Only the song titles are listed, even when the source is a collection.
