Tamburro, Barbara Boscaino. Great Music for String Orchestra: A Conductor’s Guide to Program Development Featuring the Top 100 Intermediate and Advanced Works. Galesville, Maryland: Meredith Music Publications, 2011.
-
A repertory guide for conductors to plan thoughtful and appropriate concert programs for string orchestras at the intermediate and advanced levels. Teachers and music librarians will also find this reference tool useful for building a string orchestra library fitting for the ensembles. Suggestions on music preparation and performance are especially helpful for beginning conductors and music educators. Publisher contact information, performance notes based on the author’s experience and interpretation, and program notes increase ease with which conductors can compile programs and locate the needed music.
-
Includes author’s selection of 100 “solid, well-written arrangements and original pieces from master composers” for intermediate and advanced string orchestras. Excludes works designed for first and second year players.
-
Four sections of introductory material: Choosing Appropriate Music for Concert Performance, Program Format, Score Preparation, and The String Orchestra Library. The main body is divided into three units: (1) Intermediate Level Ensembles, (2) Advanced Level Ensembles, and (3) Additional Repertoire, subdivided into String Folios and Bound Volumes, Warm Up Materials for String Orchestra, Performance Folios for String Orchestra, Patriotic Music in Print Arranged for String Orchestra, and Renaissance Music Arranged or Adaptable for String Orchestra. Within sections, works are ordered alphabetically by title. Information included (as applicable): work title, composer, arranger, composer birth and death dates, composer birth place, publisher, meter, key, period/style, difficulty level, performance notes, program notes, and featured additional titles from the publisher, composer, or arranger (chosen by Tamburro or the publisher). Three appendices: (1) Grading System. Describes criteria. (2) List of Publishers and Distributors, with contact information. (3) Sources. A basic bibliography. Indexed by composer.
-
Lists of featured additional titles by publishers and composers greatly increase the number of suggested works in this book (beyond the 100 graded pieces). Works are graded, by difficulty, on a consistent system, rather than relying on inconsistent publisher-assigned grades.
