Reference book on the German music lending business from the late 18th to the early 20th century.
-
The book deals with the function, significance, and topography of a form of commercial music distribution (lending companies) in Germany from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. The history of this type of business is explained in detail, and indexes list many of the German catalogues from these lending businesses.
-
The book is divided into twelve chapters, which include the following: Introduction; Commercial lending libraries and historical research: an orientation; The previous situation; The beginning of the music lending business: four portraits; Between education and commerce: the institutionalization of business driven music lending; The upswing of the music lending business in the second fourth of the 19th century; Music lending institutions in German speaking lands up to 1840; Music lending businesses in other countries; On the customers, fees, and use of music lending institutions; The zenith of commercial music lending: 1850-1880; A look at selected lending catalogues; and The decline of the music lending business and its causes. These chapters are then followed by an index of catalogues from music lending institutions, a bibliography, a list of sources used by the author, and then a final set of indexes (organized by multiple aspects of the lending business company, composer, region, library, etc.). At the very end is a table which lists German cities in alphabetical order on the left, and the year (by every ten years) across the top. Then a number is given for each city and the corresponding year, representing the number of music lending businesses there were during that time period in that city.
