Organized alphabetically by composer's name. Each entry contains prefatory notes about authentic, questionable, and doubtful symphonies for the composer. Notes about each work also include: numbering, instrumentation, date of completion, modern scores, and available recordings. This section is followed by musical incipits from each symphony, which are organized either chronologically, by key, or based on a format defined in a thematic catalogue. Related bibliographical information is included with each incipit. At the end of the book, there are three sections: Abbreviations for Musical Instruments, Catalogue References, and Library Sigla.
-
Musical incipits provide helpful insights into the thematic basis for each symphony.
