26th edition: Information concerning business activities in the career of songwriting. Includes articles on many topics a potential songwriter should understand, from having a song listened to, to signing a recording/publishing deal. Some of the information is also beneficial for songwriters who want to further their career.
36-37th editions: Provides songwriters with contact information and submission guidelines for companies in the music industry to whom they can submit demos in order to obtain contracts. -
26th edition: Produced annually in America. The articles focus on how to make a career in songwriting, rather than the theories of songwriting, educational requirements of a songwriter, or statistics of the field. Any information that should be updated from the previous edition, as far as new requirements or expectations of the market, are included in the articles.
36-37th editions: Companies and personnel in the American, Canadian, and international music markets. Most entries concern popular styles, but the “Classical Performing Arts” section is focused on classical music. Updated annually. -
26th edition: Organized into four sections The first section contains articles to help you use the text. The second is about the business of songwriting and contains articles on topics such as: copyrights, publishing, collaboration and studio work. The third section is about the markets. It includes subsections on the following markets: music publishers, record companies, record producers, and managers and booking agents. For each market, a listing of companies is followed by an categorical index that is organized by the type of music that particular company is involved with. The fourth section is about resources. This section includes a listing of websites of interest, a glossary, a film & TV index (does not refer back to body of text), a geographic index (does not refer back to body of text), and a general index. A list of symbol and abbreviation icons is given at the beginning of the book, as well as a key to what each icon represents. At the end of each article in each section, there may be one or more of these icons, followed by further explanatory information, as the icons relate to the topic of the article.
36-37th editions: The main section, titled “Markets,” is divided into 8 subsections: (1) Music Publishers, (2) Record Companies, (3) Record Producers, (4) Managers & Booking Agents, (5) Music Firms, (6) Play Producers and Publishers, (7) Classical Performing Arts, and (8) Concerts & Awards. Within each subsection, entries are listed alphabetically by company name. Entries provide: company name, openness to submissions, contact information, people to contact, year established, staff size, release frequency, payment vehicle, distribution vehicle, guidelines for submissions, music types sought, and recent releases. Other sections provide advice to beginning songwriters. Six indexes: Music Publishers, Record Companies, Record Producers, Managers & Booking Agents, General Index and Geographical Index. -
26th edition: Updated annually. There are nine insider reports by songwriters, recording artists, and industry insiders with established careers. There is an article about Internet opportunities for songwriters, which is very useful in today's technological age. Diagrams and answers to frequently asked questions are included. A two-page Quick Start preface takes the reader step-by-step through the process of preparing songs to be heard by music industry professionals. These steps refer to page numbers in the text where information regarding that particular subject is given.
