Find and use word-for-word, exact translations of Latin texts found in sacred Latin choral settings. Serves as a point of reference for the origins and a brief history of the text. A good source for the liturgical context of the text.
-
Contains translations, histories, and context of all sacred Latin texts commonly set to choral music. Where possible, a basic reprint of original notation from a particular setting or part of chant is included. Also contains a more poetic setting of the text to establish proper English word order.
-
This work begins with an Introduction, The Liturgical Year, The Hours of Divine Office, a Glossary of Terms, and a Pronunciation Guide. The remainder of the work is divided into four large sections: The Roman Mass; The Requiem Mass; Other Sacred Texts; Appendices (Selected Setting of the Latin Texts, Title and First Line Index). The section titled Other Sacred Texts contains 98 additional sacred Latin text translations. Each of the selections under the first three large sections contains a literal translation, a text history, the liturgical context of the text, and a translation that established proper English word order.
-
Contains literal translations rather than poetic translations. Allows directors and choir members to fully understand the meaning of each word sung and avoid performing with only a general sense of the meaning at any given moment.
-
Notably missing, however, are publisher names and numbers for those pieces; all that is given is the title and voicing.
