Researchers studying hymnology would find this to be a valuable resource. Musicians compiling hymnbooks, writing hymns, or those interested in the story of a hymn or alternate texts or translations might also use this book. The authors strive to make the material accessible to those who are only acquainted with the English language.
-
The authors report on the history, geography, authorship, and languages of thousands of Christian hymns from their research of nearly 10,000 manuscripts in European and American libraries. Hymns of the greatest number are found in the German, English, Latin, and Greek languages, though there are about 200 languages represented. Special attention is given to hymns found in the hymnbooks of English-speaking countries.
-
Entries are organized alphabetically, with A to O in the first volume and P to Z in the second. Many entries correspond to the first line of the hymn, whether in English or a foreign language. Other entries are for the name of the composer or author of the hymn. Entries include biographical information about the author, other known translations, and where and in what form the hymn first appeared. Two indexes: First Line (including entries for common translations) and Author’s Name. There is also a supplementary section containing additional entries added in 1907 in the second edition (the first edition was in 1892) and corresponding indexes for that section as well.
