-
Helpful in identifying sources on African music as of 1978. This field of research was lacking in many areas, and this source provides a synopsis of what research has already been done, helping other researchers to determine what else there is to study.
-
Included in this bibliography are books and also articles from periodicals that address African music. Among the languages represented are French, English, Portuguese and German. All known articles to have appeared since 1950 plus a representative selection of earlier articles and books concerned with music are included. The geographic region focused on is sub-Saharan Africa.
-
The contents include a preface, introduction, a list of periodicals and serials, a key to symbols, the main bibliography, author index, index of tribal names, and an index of linguistic areas. The main bibliography is divided into two sections: Articles (divided into geographical sections: General, West Africa, Central Africa, Southwest Africa, South Central Africa, South Africa, Southeast Africa and East Africa) and Books. Each entry has a concise, but informative annotation. All entries are organized alphabetically by author within each section or subsection, or by title when no author is specified.
-
Includes writings by native Africans.
