Moanin' Low: A Discography of Female Popular Vocal Recordings, 1920-1933. Discographies, no. 67. Westport, Connecticut; London: Greenwood Press, [1996].
-
A comprehensive list of recordings of female popular vocal recordings from 1921-1933, useful as a foundation for those doing research on popular music from that time period. Also useful for someone looking for a recording of a particular song or a particular singer during the said time period.
-
Only includes recordings from 1920-1933. Includes singers of Tin Pan Alley songs, vaudeville blues artists, music hall performers, early jazz singers, dance band vocalists, and starts of stage, screen, and radio. Does not include recordings of classical, operatic, or sacred songs, even if sung by a popular singer. Includes songs in English, even if recorded outside of the United States. Excludes any song not recorded in English.
-
The preface includes the purpose of the research and coverage criteria, then a User's Guide, explaining the organization within the entries. There are two tables: the first lists the cities where these recordings took place, and the second lists all of the record labels represented in the discography. The discography itself is organized alphabetically by the singer's last name, with each of their recordings listed chronologically. Each entry includes the following information when available: artist's name, artist description (soprano, alto, etc.), accompaniment details, place of recording, date of recording, matrix number, take number, titles of each song, record issue information, and notes providing any further relevant information. An Index of Titles arranges songs alphabetically, listing where in the book to find their recordings.
-
Organized system of citation gives precise information in little space, index is helpful for finding individual songs.
