The index now printed was meant to be the chief feature of a book on Hymns and canticles in the series of Handbooks of liturgical study, edited by Professor H. B. Swete and R. J. H. Strawley. But when completed it proved to be so bulky that is was necessary to publish it as a separate volume. -- Pref.

Mearns, James. Early Latin Hymnaries: An Index of Hymns in Hymnaries Before 1100. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1913.
-
Designed as a representative index of early Latin hymns for use by musicologists researching early sacred music.
-
The author acknowledges that this is not an exhaustive index, but instead a convenient book of reference of Latin hymns written in England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain.
-
Two indexes are found in this book. The first is a listing of the hymnal sources organized by country in which they were written. Each entry includes the location of the hymnal, information about the layout of each hymnal, and a code to be used in the second index. The hymns are listed in the second index alphabetically by text incipit. Each entry includes the incipit, the subject, the composer, a reference to three compilations of hymn texts where the hymn is found, and the hymnals in which the hymn is published.
