Randall, Mallison, compiler. The Choirmaster's Guide to the Selection of Hymns and Anthems for the Services of the Chuch. Rev. ed. New York: The H.W. Gray Co., Sole Agents for Novello & Co., Ltd., 1911.
To show which hymns and anthems are suitable for each Sunday of the church year and other occasions. This book provides a ready reference for busy church music leaders and is valuable as a reference to church music in the early 1900's.
The main criteria is a selection of hymns which are appropriate to the subject matter of the sermons and lessons of the day. The hymns were chosen for their ability to reflect and emphasize the church teachings and to bring consistency to the service.
The work begins with a preface, introduction, table of contents, Table of Saint's Days and Fixed Feasts, Table of Moveable Feasts, and a list of abbreviations. There are 120 pages organized according to the church year, beginning with the first week of Advent. There are no dates on these pages, as they depend on the current year calendar. This is followed by pages for saint's days. There are additional entries for national holidays and special events, such as Holy Matrimony and Burial of the Dead. The individual entries have a listing of morning and evening hymns and anthems. At the bottom of the page is the scriptural reference. Some Sundays may also include a list of cantatas, solos, and organ music. The appendix has anthems organized alphabetically by subject. It also lists choral processionals, vesper hymns, anthems with orchestral accompaniment, anthems for men's voices and unaccompanied anthems.
