Shearin, Hubert G., and Josiah H. Combs. A Syllabus of Kentucky Folk-Songs. Lexington, Kentucky: Transylvania Print Company, 1911.
-
A collection of folk-songs from Kentucky.
-
Includes 333 songs, all transmitted orally. The songs were gathered very casually during the last five years through occasional travel, acquaintanceship, and correspondence. The songs all come from Kentucky, primarily from the Cumberland Mountain region.
-
Organized into 18 sections; some based on the songs' origins (i.e. songs of British origin), while other sections are based on topic (i.e. songs relating to various occupational pursuits). Entries contain the title of the tune, the rhyme scheme, stressed syllables, and number of stanzas. Includes an index of song titles.
-
The grouping scheme, although inconsistent, is logical and easy to follow. Index allows one to locate specific tunes.
-
No table of contents to list the 18 sections.
