Simms, Bryan R. Alban Berg: A Guide to Research. Composer Resource Manuals, ed. Guy A. Marco, vol. 38. New York: Garland, 1996.
-
Starting point for research on Berg, his life and compositions.
-
A brief biography of Berg, and his published musical works and writings on music. The largest coverage is topical writings about Berg's major musical works. The author acknowledges that though containing upwards of 1000 citations, this book is not a comprehensive listing of books/articles written about Berg. On page xii of the Preface, a generalization of what writings were left out is given.
-
The book begins with a brief biography, a survey of Berg's works, and a discussion of trends in research. The next two chapters list Berg's published compositions and published writings. Chapters 4 through 9 list writings about Berg and his music, organized according to his works and genres: 4-Wozzeck, 5-Lulu, 6-Chamber Music, 7-Orchestral Music, 8-Songs, 9-Berg's Life and Works. Most chapters are divided into subsections, with each entry then being listed alphabetically by author. Each entry includes complete bibliographical information. Three indexes: 1- Authors, Editors, Translators, and Reviewers; 2- Subjects; 3- A Concordance of Titles for Berg's Music.
-
Brief abstracts are given for nearly all citations. Languages for articles are also listed.
-
No discography but a reference to a discography is given.
