Garen, Dana Howard. The Viola Concerto. M.M. thesis, University of Houston, 1971.
-
Examines viola concertos throughout history, including an annotated bibliography of viola concertos. Useful for both performers and research.
-
Earliest known viola concertos up until 1971. Provides a brief history of viola playing, development of the concerto, the history of the viola concerto, potential viola concerto repertoire, and then a catalog of viola concertos. Additional bibliographies point out some general references, books and articles on the viola, and catalogs and collections of music.
-
The first half reads like a book and is organized into chapters pertaining to subject: history of viola playing, development of the concerto, history of the viola concerto, and potential viola repertoire. The second half is a listing of concertos, arranged alphabetically by composer and grouped by instrumentation. Includes bibliography.
-
An excellent source for the historical background on the viola concerto. The listing of concertos also provides information on recordings.
-
One must know the specific instrumentation of a concerto to find it. Not as comprehensive as other works (Zeyringer, etc.).
