Johnston, Blair. “Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986).” Classical Archives: The Ultimate Classical Music Destination. http://www.classicalarchives.com/composer/5873.html (accessed 11 April 2011).
-
To provide students and teachers with basic information concerning Edmund Rubbra’s life, career, and works as well as connect the user to digital sound recordings of his compositions.
-
The website concerns itself with basic, factual information regarding Rubbra’s musical and professional life and his works list. Particular emphasis, however, has been placed on recordings of his music. The works list seems to reflect Classical Archive’s available recordings and may not be complete.
-
The page is divided into three sections: Biography, Works, and Albums. The Biography is self-explanatory and includes a single black-and-white photo of the composer. The Works page groups compositions by genre, which are listed without any obvious method of organization. Clicking on a title will redirect the user to a page of available recordings featuring this work, listed alphabetically by the primary performer. A website subscription is required to listen to the tracks in full. The Album page displays various albums featuring Rubbra or Rubbra’s music, which can be purchased as MP3 albums from the website. Each album typically provides the name of the performer, works performed, performance date, album release date, an image of the album cover, other performers featured on the album, and length of each track.
-
The source is easily navigable and provides quickly-located, basic information about Rubbra.
-
Because Classical Archives is primarily an online merchant of digital recordings, information unrelated to the available discography by or about Rubbra is not extensive or comprehensive by any means. Locating specific works on the Works page is also difficult as they are not listed alphabetically.
