Goodfellow, William D. Song Cite: An Index to Popular Songs, Supplement. Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, no. 2127. New York: Garland Publishing, Inc. 1999.
-
Intended to assist, by various means, singers and teachers of singing in the search for a song, and to indicate where the printed music can be found.
-
Includes 201 music books and over 6500 different compositions. Anthologies contain rock music, country music, musical theater selections, and popular standards. Also includes television theme songs. All songs included were published in 1990 or later, or have popular appeal (i.e., are either of recent vintage or have a popularity that has withstood the test of time). None are included in any other index currently in print. The majority of the collections are comprised entirely of vocal music, although an occasional instrumental work is included.
-
Organized in four parts. The first section is a bibliography of the collections indexed, with an accompanying numerical code (8 pages). The second section is an alphabetical index of titles or first lines, which guides the reader to the corresponding anthology or collection (199 pages). Each individual entry in this index initially offers either the title or the first line of the song (if the title is present, then the first line of the song immediately follows in the citation, and vice versa). It also lists the composer of the song, and the numerical code indicating the corresponding anthology. the third section is an alphabetical index of composers, which also supplies the title of each song (158 pages). The final section is an alphabetical index of musicals, motion pictures, and television, which lists the title of each song found within that particular work (35 pages).
-
Inclusion of music found in movies and television shows is unique and interesting. Inclusion of many popular songs published before (because they have withstood the test of time) makes the book more useful and less limited.
-
An explanation of the work's abbreviations would be helpful. Current only to 1999.
