-
To promote and share research regarding the life and work of lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss.
-
Website available in German, English, and French. Includes all works “attributed to ‘Weiss,’ including the works for Johann Sigismund Weiss,” his brother. This list comes primarily from D. A. Smith’s dissertation and the “Sämtliche Werke.” At this point, the names of the composers are included as they appear in the original sources (more research needed to make necessary corrections). It also includes dubious works. The recordings catalog by Peter van Dessell includes recordings of Weiss's works by a lute; guitar transcriptions are excluded. Dessell includes recordings that he has not heard personally.

The homepage features an engraving of Weiss, introduction to the site, and a feature regarding how to spell his first name. The Life tab includes a biography, quotations from those who knew him, and an essay about the “rediscovery” of Weiss and his work. The Documents page quotes two entries from Gottscheds Handlexicon about the lute and Weiss. The Works section begins with an introduction, followed by a list of libraries that hold Weiss manuscripts. Selecting the siglum shows how many manuscripts that institution holds and whether they are duplicates or a single copy. Then, all entries are listed in alphabetical order by siglum. Each entry includes information such as the title, key, incipit, WeissSW number and/or Smith number, sigla for other institutions that hold that piece, and an option to download a midi file. The next section is the actual works list. The catalog is organized by WeissSW number, but it is also possible to organize it by Smith or Klima numbers. These entries include details such as the title; key; incipit; WeissSW, Smith, or Klima numbers; and midi file. They also list every possible title with their respective siglum. Users may search for a certain piece by movement and key. Finally, there is a list of compositions organized by WeissSW whole numbers. The catalog of recordings by Peter van Dessel begins with an introduction and then sorts the pieces into groups of sonatas, suites, and miscellaneous solo pieces, ensemble works. Data for each entry includes movement names, Smith number, main source location(s), SW volume number(s), and additional comments. Beneath each sonata or piece is a list of recordings. These are organized by movement number and then listed alphabetically by last name of the performer ('complete' recordings come first). Other information given includes date, format, name of the label, and disc reference. This catalog also includes an index of how Dresden numbers correspond with sonata numbers and an alphabetical list of performers and their recordings. The Literature tab includes bibliographies categorized by monographies, articles, editions, ensemble editions, and guitar editions. Before these is an introduction and downloadable sections of Michel Cardin's The London Manuscript Unveiled. The final tabs include information about the website itself (acknowledgements, updates, sitemap, history), other useful links, and a contact page.
-
The recordings catalog is well organized and is available for download; Dessel specifies which movements are actually recorded within larger works.
-
At the top of each type of works list, different numbers are given for how many pieces there are by Weiss; it does not specify if pieces refers to specific copies of a movement, a movement in general, etc.
